With the arctic blast freezing much of Houston a few weeks ago, most plants and flowers were hit hard and died. But are they really dead?! Expert gardeners say some may look dead but are actually still alive. The key way to tell is to scratch the bark with your fingernail. If the inside is green, the plant is still alive! You can trim back everything dead, shake off all old dead leaves, prune it to the shape you like, and then just wait for it to come back. In our garden, it seemed that the foxtail ferns all died. We cut them all the way down to the ground and behold, we saw brand new baby foxtail about to emerge! Loropetalum survived, Jane magnolia survived, roses of course survived, sago palms survived (blah, kind of wish they died), and azaleas seem to have survived (some of them). RIP was the gardenias, hibiscus, bird of paradise, pretty much everything tropical.
